On May 2006, the European Commission officially designated the French Food Safety Agency (now known as the French agency for food, environmental and occupational health safety, ANSES) as the European Union Reference Laboratory (EU-RL) for Listeria monocytogenes.
The activities of the EU-RL are handled by ANSES's Maisons-Alfort Laboratory for study and research on food quality and processing.

Commission Regulation (EC) No 882/2004 defines the role and duties of the European Union Reference Laboratories. The EU-RL for feed and food shall be responsible for the proper use by the National Reference Laboratories (NRL) of the methods set down in the Commission Regulations. Commission Regulation (EC) No 2073/2005 lays down the microbiological criteria for Listeria monocytogenes.
